Normally when one gets married they plan on it lasting, with that said I'll mention a scenario that does happen as your question indicates, why get married only to get divorced. It happens occasionally especially among young servicemen who marry asian brides only to find out later they were douped by their bride only so she could gain citizenship and bring her family to america. So while it does happen the norm is most marry with the thought of living happily ever after. Some also find divorce easier than compromising or working through problems.

Well, does this mean we're supposed to be able to see into the future? What if your spouse turned out to be abusive, and you didn't see this side of him (even after, oh, three years of dating, let's say) until you married him?

Also, why do Americans think that they absolutely have to get married?

(I'm American, by the way.)

My question is why?
Not as in why get married, but as in why not?
I think that marriage will be a wonderful thing, and if you are letting the fear of getting divorced get in the way, well, no offence, but I think there's something wrong with you.
Enjoy life, including marriage.

Why take any risk at all? Why drive to work when you could die along the way? This line of thinking is ridiculous. Life is fragile and that's one of the reasons it's worth pursuing.

If you are already thinking about divorce, then you probably shouldn't get married.
