Spinster- a woman who spins, as in makes thread. Masculine would be spinner.

Appended in the 17th century, because; so many unmarried women spun for a living.

It has nothing to do with the church.

I've always thought of it meaning someone who knits all the time. It certainly seems to have a negative sound to it, but I wouldn't think it would be church related. Because technically, all nuns would be spinsters.

Spinster is an older unmarried woman. I don't think it is meant to be undesirable but it probably means that she hasn't found her soul mate.
