There is a $90 difference on the laptop I am getting and, though I can afford it, I want to know if it really is worth it to go the extra mile. The single stick is the one that costs more.

There is no difference.

However, if you get two sticks, and there is a chance that one of your RAMS goes bad, then at least you have another one that will be a nice backup.

If you get just 1 stick, then it gives you the option of upgrading to 2 gigs in the future....otherwise you will have to pay for another 1 gig ram all over again.

If you have 4 slots, then get the 2 sticks if it saves you money.

There is no real big difference. Either way its a GB of ram. Now whats the processing speed of the 1 GB and the 2 512 Mb?

I would simple purchase the 1 GB of RAM instead of 2-512.

In our world- you always need the most RAM you can afford. Buying the one GB will give you the opportunity later to add to it by leaving one of your slots open.

The performance difference between 2-512 and 1-1GB is minor.

If your computer has two memory slots and can take up to 2 GBs of ram, then get 2 x 1 GB memory, why settle for less? With 2 GBs of memory, your computer will run a lot faster and enable you to do multi-tasks, such as running WMP, internet, office, and chatting at the same time. If you get your memory at Fry's when they're on sale, it cost about the same or less.

If the computer supports dual channel the 2 sticks will be faster, if not there is no difference other than the ability to continue to add more memory.

2 x 512 better
if 1x 1024mb or 1 gb dumage your system is not usable
if one of 2X 512 mb module dammaged your system useable
with otger module in speed and performance no difference

the 2X512mb is better because with one stick loads of iknfo will go it and it will slow down pc... but with two 512's half of the load will got to each so two sticks are better than one like two brains are better than one :)
