The main reason is that when the fetus is in utero his or her lungs are filled with amniotic fluid, when the baby passes through the birth canal his lungs are comprised and most of the liquid gets out but at the same time the lungs get completely collapsed.
The baby's brain doesn't need to breath ambient air while the umbilical cord is still intact because it is transferring oxygen from the mother to the baby but once its cut the baby's brain starts to get less oxygen and activates the respiratory centers which make the baby take a deep breath.
But since the lungs are collapsed he will need to do an extreme effort to expand the lungs so he will need to use all the muscles in his chest, this effort his huge and this is the reason of the cry its not as much of a pain cry as it is a yell of strength (like the ones you can hear sometimes from athletes)
Actually the first one is the hardest breath you'll ever take in your life, once the lugs expand breathing will be so easy that you´ll even forget that you are doing it.

It is an involuntary reaction which opens their lungs. Prior to birth, a baby's lungs are collapsed, and as it is expelled from the birth canal, the lungs expand and the infant begins to breath on its own. Crying helps make sure all the cells in the lungs are expanded and operating.
Incidentally, getting the baby to take that first breath is why doctors give the baby a gentle tap or spank.

It's probably just a shock to them. They were so used to one surrounding, there mothers belly, then come out into the bright lights and loud noise. I would be scared too and most likely cry

The reason why babies cry when they are first born is because (doctors say) they are "testing" out their lungs but some other people say it's because they are being taken out of their warm "temporary home" which is their mother's stomach.

Their lungs are just beginning to kick in. That's why if babies do not cry, the doctor gets a bit worried. Crying is a way of the respiratory system kicking in.

Babies usually haver a bunch of junk in their lungs from being in the womb for so long, so by crying they get a lot of it up, and first start to breathe as well. if they dont start crying they arent breathing and that could mean their lungs are still full.

You try being in the dark for 9 months and pulled out into a brightly lit room, not knowing what's going on. You might just cry too! lol

They are working their lungs and also they have been inside a nice warm area, and then all of a sudden, they are out and cold, just a way of letting Mom and Doctors know that they are fine and breathing
