For instance, rather than buying a new CD deck for my car, would it be smarter to just buy a portable DVD player, and record my music to DVD (in order to hold much more songs per disc). Do most portable DVD systems play audio-only discs? or am i way off track? lol

you can play regular cds on a portable dvd player or you could buy a cd player that is mp3 compatible. You can burn over 100 mp3s on to cds. I would reccomend just getting an ipod or something with a car adaptor. It holds tons of songs and you would be able to take it anywhere

I don't know about smarter, but it certainly wouldn't sound very good unless your current head unit has an auxiliary jack for you to plug the DVD player into.

I think most DVD players can play audio CDs, so I would check the features of the portable DVD players before you buy them. That way you can save money and burn music to CD instead of to DVD. As far as burning to DVD to hold more, I've never tried it. I would consult the user's manual on one you are interested in, and if it's not listed, just give it a try.

Most DVDs play audio CD. You do not have to use DVD for audio recording you can use the less expensive Cd's

Yes. You can burn a Data Disk using a DVD-R and play it in some DVD players. Not quite sure on an estimate of how many songs it will hold. But, just think...4.7GB of data!

We are not talking simply albums; we are talking about libraries!

Yes you can and yes you're on-track. The DVD system will also conveniently play CD's.

No,because a MP3player is for music not for the dvd player.
