I have a belgium draft mare and she just doesn't seem to learn. Everything i teach her she forgets the next time i try it again
Help Please!

Belgiums are vert smart horses. They have a nice stable tempermant.
How often are you working with her?
It takes many repitions to train a horse to do one thing. YOu have to do it day in and day out for many weeks.
Some take much longer than others.
If you train every day start where you left off the day before ask for what ever you are trying to teach and get one or two good attempts and then move on.
Some horses get bored very easily and will stop doing things becasue they are just plain bored with too many reptitions.
Take your time and if you can find a trainer to work with in your area that may help.

You need to be VERY consistent. Work every day for no more then 15 minutes. Not too long, you don't want to burn her out. Focus on one thing every session, say you need your horse to walk and stop when you do beside it without having to tug on its lead rope. Do that but NOTHING else, as soon as your horse does it perfectly QUIT. It doesn;t matter if you did it for 2 minutes or 15.
Then the next day do the same exact thing again. If your horse gets it right off the bat she gets a praise and goes back wherever she goes. If she gets it right off the bat three days in a row, you can move on. But the day after you move on go back and be sure she still had what you taught her.

I also have a Belgian. The trick to training a horse, any horse, is consistancy. Start with the basics and repeat every day. Gradually add new things that are extensions of prior lessons.
Repetition and patience are necessary. Horses are creatures of habit and most lessons have to be repeated. Please don't expect your horse to remember something you have only shown
her once. Try to make the lessons fun for both of you. I use treats like apple cookies broken in small pieces as occasion rewards for a job well done. Rubbing and scratching her favorite places also works well.

Repetition and consistency means a lot. It doesn't say how old this mare is - yearling? 2? older? Age has a lot to do with attention span too.
