we can measure 4, height, width, length, and time, but there are theories, (super string, and the like) that are suggesting upwards of 11. So, it's a hard question. But the defining part of the answer is, "we live in," and one would then have to answer, just the 4. Peace!

Zero dimensions is a point. It has neither hieght, width, or depth. A line is one dimensional. It has length. Add another dimension at right angles to the first and you have a plane. A plane is two dimensional. Add another dimension at right angles to both the first and the second, and you have a volume, which you can think of as a cube. This has length, height, and depth. Add another dimension at right angles to all three, and you have a hypercube. We can only move in the first three dimensions. You can however theoretically keep adding dimensions at right angles to all the others indefinitely. The study of additional dimensions after the three we are familiar with, is called hypergeometry.

There are 11 accepted by most physicists today. 10 are spatial, 1 is time. The 3 we observe and know as points x, y, z, are great for measuring and describing objects larger than the atom. But unfortunatly, Newtonian physics breaks down at the speed of light, and this is where sub-atomic particles such as the electron operate in. Due to something called the "Uncertainty Principle", it is impossible to deduce the location of an electron. It is always moving at the speed of light and never at one point at one time, but at many places, at many times. Simply put, 3-D is simply not enough. Therefore, more dimensions are needed.
Through endless research, theoretical physicists have generally accepted 11 dimensions, which fit mathematically with theories such as Super String Theory, M- Theory, and Quantum Mechanics.

we live in the 3rd dimension, but there are thoeries that say time is the 4th....so we might be living in 4, even though we cant say for sure. The 4th dimension might be something else and we might one day be able to travel into it and make operations without making a cut, pretty much like you can poke inside the 2nd dimension through the 3rd

There are 4 known spacetime dimensions, but many others have been theorized.
David Deutsch has a simple laser experiment that proves that either; there is at least 1 more spacetime dimension we can't usually observe, or our basic understanding of physics is horribly flawed.
