Has anyone ever experinced being treated unkindly because your skin is or was darker among african-americans. (please everyone, don't be offened with my question.) I only thought of this question because of the conversation I had today in class.
I don't mean to be rude in any kind of way.

I am a light skinned African American.

However, I've seen people being treated badly or teased because of their dark skin.
In many, many cultures (chinese, indian, filipino, black american, japanese), lighter skin is considered more beautiful than darker skin.

just as you see fat or ugly people be treated unfairly... the same happens to darker skinned people

it all depends on that society's ideas of beauty.

Due to my mother's mixed heritage (Cherokee), I was born a medium- to- light caramel color that seems to be "adjustable". I was so enthralled and infactuated by dark skin that I have been systematically tanning and darkening myself over the years. I feel "naked" and "pale" when I don't sun. Also, I work outside as an Aquatics Pro during the summer. I love to oil up and glisten in the sun while my center-of -my-back lengthed dredlocs shine a natural auburn. And I don't really care what others' standard of beauty is. I consider myself blessed that I have the range in tone that I have. If I don't sun for the summer, I fade to medium caramel, but when I can get out there early in the season, I can get myself as dark as I want to. I have met only one other sister who does the same as I do.

And it is still worse in the South. I noticed that the lighter skinned people there can get great jobs right out of high school, whereas as, if you are darker you definitely need a degree to do the same job!!! Mmmm

Sad but true.

It happens a lot. You're not being rude. It's good that you ask. Yes, there is a lot of stereotyping among black folks about skin color. My parents were both light-skinned and one of my brothers is. The other one and me are both medium brown. But my relatives used to tease me and say I was pretty, but I was dark. I didn't care much but I knew they treated the light skinned ones better.

I am dark skin and I have always been treated more negative by whites and blacks because of my color. That is the effect of racism inflicted by whites based on color. Whites think that if you are of lighter skin color you have some white blood in you so they will tend to give more consideration to you. But if you have darker skin they WILL be more negative toward us and exclude us more. You did not offend me. Been there. Is there.

I'm white but i have a friend who is black and her grandmother used to tell her she was ugly cuz she was a "darky" . Most of her cousins are lighter skinned than her, aparently it is a pretty common occurance in families. My friend had really bad self image because of it. Alot of pain in her lifebecause of her grandmas comments

I'm a Black male and I'm light-skinned. I've been called "yellow" and "high-yellow" -- both of which I find offensive. Other than that, I haven't been ill-treated more or less than any other person of color, I presume.

some people (not you) are so sheltered nowadays and it's a shame because after all of our society has been through people still don't have enough common sense to realize that we're all the same weather we all like it or not.
