Why is a football team allowed to be named "United"? If Detroit gets a MLS team, should it be named United?

There are so many teams named "United" and I think Detroit United FC or Michigan United FC would be better than simply Detroit FC. My question is whether or not there is a prerequisite to be allowed to have that "United" tag or can a team just adopt it because they want it?

As long as the name is not patent they can use the name. Detroit United sounds good.

is just something historic like manchester united newcastle united portsmouth united if detroits gets a team i wouldnt mind it but as long as it sounds better than real salt lake
