To clarify Pete S.'s answer...

Barry sang the song but didn't write 'I write the songs'... it was wishful thinking on his part.

Bruce Johnston did write 'I write the songs', but he didn't actually write the songs that made the whole world sing... more wishful thinking.

Bruce Johnston did in fact write the song about Brian Wilson, resident genius/sandbox-hermit of the Beach Boys. A world in which the whole world sings 'Be true to your school' is not one in which I would like to live, but there you have it.

In fact, Barry M - never one to decieve - wanted to change the song to 'I sing the song that another guy wrote about another guy still who writes the songs that make certain portions of the world sing', but it wouldn't fit on the record label.

He did, however, send Mandy away for committing the crime of giving without taking. He was an evil, evil man...
