When they mention that in a job application, does it also mean they are going to check your credit history. Or do they have to be more clear if they are going to do a credit check

Companies who are going to hire you if they say they are going to do a background check, do they always check your credit?

It all depends on what kind of Background Check: If it's a Criminal background it means your Criminal history with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and or local Departments. If it's a Credit history, it could mean, jobs, addresses and other type of relevant information.

It is most likely a Criminal Background Check, so it only means all the arrests where your fingerprints where taken, whether convicted or not.

If you where never convicted of an arrest then you must obtain Certified Court records that show charges dismissed or never filed...

basic checks will confirm your social security number and name match.
criminal checks: misdemeanor and felony at all locations of residence.
employment check.

then there are more detailed ones that check credit history and things of that nature.
