They are helping to rebuild the country and keep the insurgents down. They're not intentionally killing anyone and having the constant threat of IED's definitely is not "just hanging around". It's still very dangerous and volatile over there. What the news doesn't tell you, that our soldiers know, is that the Iraqi people do appreciate all we're doing and sacrificing for them. Very slowly, they are starting to help themselves, but we'll be assisting for quite some time.

Good Question.
They are there because of Bush. He focused on Iraq because he could not find Bin Laden who caused 9/11. He looked like the weak inadequate president that he is.
He said he went into Iraq to get all the weapons of mass destruction he said were there, but found there was very little, if any. He said he was there to help the people (after his father was not successful in doing so before) and the war began. He looked stupid again.
So, bottom line is he and the right wing fundamentalist Christians took what happened on 9/11 (which was our fight) and made it about Iraq (not our fight) because Bin Laden was never found. He knew he looked like an inadequate fool that was unable to lead a country leaving people to feel unsafe, betrayed, misled and lied to. (Which is all true) For those reasons we are in Iraq and should not be.
The soldiers were suppose to help Iraq's army to liberate the people and be a support to them as they rebuild. But, instead they are now fighting a war between the Iraq's, which is NOT why they came there. That is their war and we have all we can do to help ourselves now. WE MUST help our own country first before we can help anyone else.
I WANT TO SAY THAT I HAVE THE HIGHEST RESPECT FOR ALL THE SOLDIERS WHO ARE OVER THERE. But as for us being over there we should not be, because we have our own problems to fight now.

Soldiers are still in Iraq to help because the small country does not yet have a large or developed enough government/military to survive on its own. And we sure don't want everything we fought for over there to go to waste when we leave to early and the same thing happens again.

you're all morons.

ask a soldier, not the american public, as they are all IDIOTS!!

"just hanging around." are you really that naive? what the heck do you think they are doing? they're working for you, keeping peace as well as they can. walking around in the heat of iraq on a daily basis. getting shot at, blown up.

everyone asks this question. and the answers they get are the answers that are fed to everyone else--BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN TO IRAQ.

I agree with the first responder ("following orders"), if US were to pull them out of Iraq we (US) will be viewed as deserters and possible looked upon even lower!!!

"When you start a task you have to complete or make a sincere effort"

and that is what our soldiers are doing!!!
