Possible sources of finance for a small business include:
- Friends / family
- Business angels (an accountant may be able to make an introduction; these "angels" are wealthy individuals who can offer business experience and advice)
- Venture Capitalists (usually will not consider investments of less than £2m and may require a certain level of control)
- Bank loan / overdraft extension. Loans may need to be secured on the property of one of the business' owners
- HM Revenue & Customs. You can usually get away with delaying the monthly payment of PAYE / NIC for a month or two without consequence.
- Debt factoring. The company's debtors are sold to a factoring company for a fee but this will improve cash flow.
- Better working capital management. Can you increase the time it takes to pay the business' creditors or decrease the time debtors take to pay you? Is your stock management system efficient?
- Grants from the government or local council.

the best business partner is the one you go out and find yourself by networking hard, doing your homework and keeping your cards close to your chest. The ones that offer themselves are NOT the best business partner. The best one will also be seriously inspired by your proposal and will be willing to put something substantial into the deal. If you can't find that, the best partner is no partner.

Location: where are you? it matters.

What kind of partner? financial? go talk to the Business Angel networks in your area but do NOT limit yourself to one conversation. Edinburgh and Cambridge are good for Business Angels.
