Wow, that's tough. Personally, I feel that Kareem Abdul Jabbar is the greatest center NBA ever, but I'm sure many will argue the point. So, I'll typically try to rate the players by decade instead:
'46 - '49 - George Mikan Mikan scored 11,764 points (22.6 ppg) in nine pro seasons, which was the best in league history when he retired. He led the league in scoring six times including a career-high 28.4 ppg in 1951. Mikan and the Lakers won 6 league championships (one NBL, one BAA and four NBA) during his playing d
'50 - '59 - Mikan & Bill Russell
'60 - '69 - Bill Russell & Wilt Chamberlain. Russell played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1969, winning the NBA championship every year except 1958 and 1967. In his first full season (1957-58), Russell became the first player in NBA history to average more than 20 rebounds per game for an entire season — a feat he accomplished 10 times in his 13 seasons. Russell earned five MVP awards.
Chamberlain was magnificent, but won only one title inspite of his records and only one title in this time. But Chamberlain is the only player in NBA history to record a double-triple-double (meaning 20 points, 20 rebounds, 20 assists in one game). In 1968 against the Detroit Pistons, he logged 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists. For basketball devotees, this may be his most jaw-dropping stat line, as it is the ultimate testimony of Wilt's versatility. Chamberlain is also the only player in NBA history to record a quadruple double-double (meaning 40 points, and 40 rebounds or 40 assists in a single game). On December 8, 1961, when he scored a then-record 78 points against the Los Angeles Lakers, he also collected 43 rebounds.
'70 - 79' - Kareem Abdul Jabbar. An NBA title in 71, Most Valuable Player (1971, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1977)
'80 - '89 - Kareem Abdul Jabbar . FIVE NBA titles (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988)
'90 - '99 - Hakeem Olajuwon 2 NBA titles(1994, '95)
2 NBA Finals MVP (1994, '95)
1 NBA MVP (1994)
2 Defensive Player of Year (1993, '94)
3x All-NBA First Team ('93, '94, '97)
2x All-NBA Second Team ('90, '96)
3x All-Defensive First Team ('90, '93, '94)
'00 ~ today - Shaquille O'Neal. Only player in NBA history to:
- Average at least 20 points per game and 10 rebounds per game in a season for 13 consecutive seasons, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Hakeem Olajuwon, all with 12 consecutive seasons.
- Reach 4,700 points, 2,200 rebounds, 500 assists, 400 blocks, and 100 steals in his playoff career while shooting at least 55% from the field.
3-time NBA Champion: 2000, 2001, 2002
But for my money, none of these guys could shut down Jabbar....owner of the most unstoppable shot in the NBA history, the sky-hook.
