You can use any Ti-Vo, Replay TV, or any other subscription based DVR without having a subscription. The subscription is for there "Guide" feature. You can still record, play, pause, and pause recorded TV just like you would if you paid for a subscription. The only thing is, is you can't have things automatically record every time they air. For instance, you would not be able to have a TV show automatically record every episode.

If you have windows XP media center edition, I would recommend you buy a TV tuner. That allows you to record TV onto your computer's hard drive, and you can even burn recorded shows to a DVD. I use mine all the time to record Family Guy and The Simpsons; no fee, it's easy and I can take the shows anywhere since I have a laptop.
