I don't know when people started saying them. Why people do it? Because they're too lazy to say the full word? Maybe. Also, preggers or even preggo kind of rolls off one's tongue more easily than pregnant.

Thank you! I thought I was the only one who didn't get it! I mean PREGNANT is not a derogatory word people! It seems so grade-school to me. Ugh I hate it "Yea so like I just found out I am preggers and I like totally don't know how to tell my mommy and and daddy!" Ugh If you are a child then I can understand but if you are a grown adult please don't use that word!

Why did you spell pregnant as pregnent? I think people say preggers because they don't know how to spell pregnant correctly, and they don't want to look stupid.

It's just a short term, preggos, preggers, prego, all of which I've been using since I was pregnant with my last child who will be three next month.
It sounds "cuter" I think than knocked up too, don't you? :)

Not sure...but to tell you the truth. I don't like it. There are all these abbreviations and slang words and its hard to keep up. Plus, according to colleges and work places its makes it hard hiring someone or having them take a proper English class because they are using so much slang word they are having trouble.

Probably a new word just launched.Young people who like to be different say something is "cool" instead of satisfactory. They say a person is "gay" instead of homosexual. There are too many of these words to list.

Problem of abbreviation/phonetic ease. Also case of mutilating existing beautiful word with something ghastly.
