If you're 5'6 you shouldn't expect to do much runway modeling if any. Runway models are usually at least 5'10" tall in bare feet. However, you could probably do commercial and catalog modeling which can also be very lucrative.
You'll need to have some professional photos taken in various outfits at some point though there are a few agents out there who will let you get away with good home snapshots for a little while. The professional ones can cost anywhere from $250 and up just for the photo session. Duplication and any airbrushing you may want to have done to remove minor flaws will cost extra.
I don't know where you're located so I can't tell you if there are any reputable modeling agencies in your area.
When you do look for an agent, under no circumstances are you to pay them money up front. If they ask for money, walk out the door immediately. No good agency will ever ask for money in advance...they work for YOU, you don't work for THEM. The usual agent's fee should range between 10% -20% of everything you earn from the work they get you.
An interview for jobs can be called a go-see. If you ever go to one of these and someone asks you to do something you're not comfortable with, leave. There are thousands of cases of models being abused, asked to pose nude just for an audition and worse and you don't want to become a statistic. Tell your agent in advance what kind of work you will and will not do.
When you're of age, know that models who do legitimate nude work are usually paid a great deal more than those who don't and at the starting level, your fee usually starts at around $650.
Learn how not to take rejection personally. There are thousands of other girls vying for the same jobs you will be and you won't get them all. Don't get discouraged if you're not right for a particular job.
And please try to at least get an undergraduate college degree...if you have a good solid education you'll have something to fall back on if the modeling doesn't work out and no one will even be able to accuse you of being another dumb model like so many of them out there are.

I am a professional photographer. Modelling is work. It can be fun, it can be a drag. It helps to have acting lessons, maybe some dancing. It sure helps to know how to use makeup.
It is important not to get scammed by modelling schools and agencies, especially right at your age. There are reputable folks out there and there are real scum. I have run into a spectrum of them.
It would help for you to work with someone to get some close up pics and some with you in different kinds of sports attire, casual, dressup, etc. Have your folks with you for those! Do time for prints or CD with the shots on them. What you want to do is work towards building a portfolio of your pictures to show prospective employers. Eventually you will want to get the gold of all things: the tear sheet. That is an actual print of a page where you appear in a real ad. That is incredibly valuable.
I shoot in the Pismo Beach, CA area. Not sure where you are but there are some photographers reachable through One Model Place that may help. Again, take your folks along with you if you decide to do anything.
Modelling can be a parttime way to pay your way through school. It can be an entre into acting or dancing. It can be an end to itself. Or it can be not for you. If you are in California or NYC, it is easier to get into than if you are in Nebraska.
Write me if you wish. I am not in the fashion biz but can be here to bounce things off.

If YOU want to (not just your mom!), then go ahead and take some classes. Modeling isn't all about your look. After all, no one will hire a model that doesn't have enough balance to stay on a runway. Become a little more experienced, try some things...and if you decide it is your passion, try to get more serious about it. But you've got to be passionate about your work, so don't settle for something you hate, or consider to be just okay. Hope I helped, and good luck!

Models dont have to be absolutely drop dead gorgeous. I have heard of some of the best models in the world, but there not very pretty. Models are people with confidence, (but not cocky), and they have a very good personality. I think that someone that is beautiful, but is very self centered, is the worst model in the world.

Modeling isnt just about looks. My sister is a model and better for it. It gives you self confidence and a great sense of fashion. If you want to, go for it. Just don't get a huge ego.

if you dont want to be a model then discuss that with your mom and tell her that she's not missing out on anything. because i am a model myself and you have to really want to be a model in order to be one and modeling is my life.
