Because he's what people like to call a "number hanger."
When your team is winning by 8 runs, he'll hit a 3 run homer to push the margin to 11 runs.
When your team is losing by 7 runs, he'll hit 2 homers and drive in 4 runs... and you'll lose by 3.
But when your team is losing by 1 run... and he comes up with the bases loaded and 1 out... he hits into a double play to end the game, or strikes out.
He's a complete clutch failure. In every way. All his biggest errors seem to come against the Boston Red Sox in close games. Every time he fails, it seems to cost his team the game.
And for the money he makes, the reputation he holds, and the ego he touts around, he should be able to do something to make him useful to his team.
Guys like Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill and Scott Brosius always seemed to come up big when the team needed them.
Alex is in his third season in pinstripes. I can't remember one time that I've been happy to see him step to the plate in a close game. He's an automatic out when the game's on the line.
