It is a hamster! Give him a break!!! You are a predator to these little creatures and it might take a while for him to trust you. Be VERY gentle with him and don't get angry if he bites or you could make his aggression worse.
Learn clicker training? That is probably the best way to train a hamster. It is scientifically a proven way of "communicating" with you animal.
Get treats for your hamster that are very high value, meaning, the best treats out there. Something he really likes.

Hamsters are by nature nocturnal animals. They are also rodents so it's their job to bite things. They are not very intelligent but can be taught to do some simple things, but it takes a lot of patience, and you will probably do better if you try later at night. You should research training methods for hamsters and other rodents on a search engine.

Listen up, kid: of course he sleeps all day. He's nocturnal, meaning he's active at NIGHT. Don't try to touch him during the daytime, wait until nightfall and then pick him up.
Hamsters are one of the dumbest creatures in the rodent family. Many do not know tricks. If you want a rodent to learn tricks, you should have gotten a rat (one of the smartest animals). Both of mine are potty-trained, come when they are called, no the meaning to some words, and do as I say most of the time because I realize they're nocturnal, treat them right, and handle them when they want to be up and about--at night!

Is your hamster biting you in agression or when you stick your hand in to touch him? He might need a salt wheel if he is bitting after you hold him for a while. My hampter use to be really jumpy so I started softly clicking my tounge and call her name so she would come to the door and then I would hold my hand next to the door for her to climb on to. now even my 4 year old can hold her. Teaching tricks I have no clue.

It's kinda hard to get them to do tricks but my hamsters are very affectionate to me and my dad and they seem to recognize who we are. Usually when I get home from work, I baby talk to them and pick them up. I usually give them food at that time and I think they associate me and my voice with giving them food so they always get excited when I get home. They stand up and they run to my hand to be picked up. Once they're comfy w/ you the hamsters will become tame and less likely to bite. Also always handle them in a gentle manner. Rub them in their back and always talk to the hamster. I know it's not recommended to pick up hamsters in their sleep but I do this a lot and they don't seem to mind and I think that's how they got familiar w/ me.
Going back to your question, once the hamster is active, it's almost impossible to make them do something cause all they wanna do is run around and escape.
