it definitely depends on the situation. if a couple is very serious about there special day, then planning for it could take a long time (plus everyone knows that you don't plan to get married RIGHT after you get engaged, which adds more time)
if a one person of the couple (usually female) feels that they are losing contact with the other it could take longer because they know they still love their mate then they probably won't tell their partner that. this could expand the time.
and there's always the possibilty that the couple would want to rush into their marriage to avoid falling apart, or for any other reason. obviously this could be as short as a month after the proposal.
it truly depends, but in a range (no matter what the scenario is) I'd say from 1 month (the rushed) to 2 years (lack of contact, or planning). I'd think about 5 months is a good time range. Rushing isn't good . . .

Until you can afford the wedding! I am engaged and that is where we are in the midst of it all! BUT, I can tell you, friends and family will pressure you, don't let them. Pick a realistic date to be married and work towards it. That means saving money. That is the part I'm hung-up on. I have other priorities right now. Fix the car, replace my glasses and so on.

Until they get married or break up. Marriage is something you need to be certain of before making that big move in your life. Just be sure and be ready for the commitment to it.

It's up to the couple but I say anything over 2 years is too long.

Until you're 200 % sure you're marrying this person, and also till you've saved enough for the wedding and planned it.
I was engaged for 2 1/2 months. and it was fun :)

It depends on circumstances. Do you need to save money for the wedding? There is no rule to the time frame.
