It's not the same looking at them in a zoo, reading about them, or watching them on TV. What if you seldom get to go to places with wild animals, and even then you can't really tell much, how do you figure this out, exactly? Do you have to witness the animals exactly, do you just identify what animal you're most like by their known characteristics (coyotes are tricky, eagles are noble, cats are regal, et cetera)? I'm sorry if this didn't make much sense. (Thank you in advance you chose to answer.)

ProudCaucasion: Yes, it is very sexist, anyone who looks at your joke question can see what I mean. You asked if it was funny; if you don't want an answer don't ask questions. By the way, it's 'peyote', your answer is pretty insulting, and I understand peyote and 'shrooms are illegal. And the second part of your name would typically be spelled 'caucasian'.

we have different animals at different times in our lives, to find out which animal is your spirit animal you have to ask yourself these questions: which animal is your favorite animal? which animal fascinates you the most? which animal do you see the most often? I once figured out that the crow was my animal(during a period of my life) because I often saw a crow and it seemed to be looking at me... it seemed to follow me... like it was protecting me... that's how i knew

I think this is a good question!
I believe that there are some people that do read about lots of animals and decide that there is one that they identify with the most. There are some people that might see an animal only once and decide by that one chance meeting that it is their spirit animal. Some people dream about a certain animal alot and that is the determining factor in their decision. I also think that some people never find an animal that they really relate to and this is ok for them!
It's just an idea that makes people happy. If you arent able to find your spirit animal, maybe it's just not time yet. Maybe you you'll never have a specific spirit animal.
Perhaps you dont have an animal, but you have a creature. Mermaid, Fairy, or something else.
In time you'll come to your own conclusion.

Good question, A-!
I suspect a lot of folks do just as you are suggesting - visit a zoo or watch a nature program and decide "Yeah, badgers can back down bears - I'm like a badger" or "I like baths, so maybe I'm an otter."
If you believe in spirit animals, there are a variety of rituals to find your very own, but the benefits of a totemic partner can be a mixed blessing. Most of the rites for finding a spirit animal are pretty painful, since they were initially intended to be rites of passage from childhood into adulthood. Some are dangerous, and involve risks to your health. None are to be entered into lightly.
If you would like to identify a spirit animal, but not risk death to do so, there is nothing essentially wrong with simply learning about an animal that appeals to you, and adopting it for your own. There is much to learn from close observation of animal behavior (indeed, from any close study at all) and introspection and self-examination are important steps in self-improvement.
Short answer, if you want a spirit animal, hook up with a shaman. If you want to use an animal as a logo, go for it - pick on.

A few years ago I went on a shamanic vision quest to find my spirit animal. Since then I have helped others find their spirit animals. It's a deeply spiritual process which cannot easily be explained, but I'll give it a try.
The first part is to find an entrance to the vision realm. this can be aided by incense and soothing sounds such as drumming or singing bowls. Imagine a hole. Go down into the hole and continue going down until just before you reach the bottom. There you see a door. Step through the door, and keep walking until you realize that you are in the vision realm. Now turn and go out the way you came in and find yourself back in your body. Know the way in and out and feel comfortable with the journey. Now go down the hole again and return to the vision realm. Call to your spirit animal, and then send it way. Then call again, and send it away. Continue doing this until the same animal appears three times in a row. That is your spirit animal.

I don't know about this whole 'new age' spirit animal stuff. People buy a book, a meditations cd and wow they have found their animal spirit guide or their 'power animal'. People want to find something so badly in life that they resort to things that Native American cultures have been doing for thousands of years. Even though the books have nothing to do with Native American culture, and they twist it to their own comfort level.
People who are not around animals at all can just go and pick up one of these books and find their special animal throgh the aid of one of these books for just 19.95.
In my culture, your animal and name is given to you. Your animal is given to you in a ceremony where the spirits give you your tribal animal. The head elder gives thanks with sage and sweetgrass, and chanting is done. I beleive traditional ojibway songs are chanted. I was give the turtle as my tribal animal. You don't choose the animal your most alike, or most drawn to.
When I was a pagan, I talked to so many people that were like
"Oh My spirit animal is a dolphin, because I like dolphins".
Although now I'm a Born Again Christian, and I don't believe in such things anymore. I know that Jesus Christ is the only way, and such things as 'spirit animals' are not the right path.

Has any animal shown up in your dreams often? For example, I dreamt of Golden Eagles, Hawks and White Owls all the time. I've never seen a Golden Eagle fly by ever in my life. White Owls in real life were a rarity. I have this really cool story about the White Owl on my 360 blog
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-O50H77Iib6fVzcbXCb1eO_cIAk0-?cq=1&l=106&u=110&mx=112&lmt=5&p=15
Something remarkable happened with the White Owl last November. Read it.
I also pay attention to what animals cross my path when I am driving. One time I saw two vultures eating a dead squirrel on my street. (I live up in the mtns.) I understood it's message to me. It was symbolic for the old being cleared up in my life. Vultures eat decaying matter. Squirrels symbolize gathering and storing, an accumulation of food, etc.

If you seriously want to know what your spirit animal is you can check into books that tell you how to open a door way, so to speak and invite your spirit animal to come to you, you may be surprised. I believe the author I'm thinking of is Ted Andrews. Also the name Animal Speak is the name of a book.

No, it makes sense. You don't have to witness animals directly at all times. If your not around animals, then maybe that shows that you aren't outgoing. Not being around animals can help you identify your personality, what animal you are like, etc. Reading about them does help. A camping trip wouldn't hurt either. :)

i don't know. i guess its the vibes we get/give off that make us connect with a certain characteristic. but we make up situations and what we want to see in our minds so its an illusion anyway. i say i identify with a wolf for most part, but i've been around wolf dogs and they're very interesting. so i can't say, i guess just a feeling or dream. at least we're identifying with something
