Lower bit rate ripping can save on file size. For example 56kb ripped song can be as little as 2 Mb or less, but you can tell quality is not as good. Try ripping at 96kb or 112 kb, if you encoder offers it. 128kb is standard as others have said...and are about 4-5 Mb per song. As long as you don't notice the lowered quality, you can possibly pack on double the number of songs.
You can find different encoders online. I use audiograbber and searched for a .dll encoder for a wider range of bit rate options.

When you rip your CDs into MP3 files just pick a lower bit rate. The standard is 128. Pick something lower like 96. You will not notice a difference in sound quality and you can pack more on your drive.

Sony has a program called Sonic Stage that compresses the files a little and converts them to atrac files instead of mp3s. You can download the program and get more info here: http://www.connect.com/download_cookie.html

I would focus more on creating playlists in your itunes setup, and then swapping them out from time to time when you need more space. There's no sense keeping too many songs in an ipod if you're not listening to them enough. Until you can get something bigger, storing them on the computer isn't too bad of a deal.

Encode at a smaller bitrate - e.g. 128kbps instead of 192kbps ... don't go lower than 90kbps though - sound quality really falls out below that.

If I was you, I would just go out and buy an iPod video. All you need is iTunes and a music library...if you don't have a good library get Limewire, Bittorrent, BearShare or something like that....less work
