All the answers above have some level of understanding about empathy. And I would like to extend a little more.

To me, empathy is in all of us. It does not judge nor tries to take the lead for others. But empathy guide us to follow another person's view and explore the inner world of others. In other words, empathy guides us to know another person in a rather deep level.

We cannot show empathy to others if we don't have empathy of ourself. If we have emapthy of ourself, we know ourselves deeply and may find out some hidden strength that we have forgotten. If knowing oneself is greatest achievement of personal development, then empathy is the secound great achievement for everyone of us.

Empathy is placing oneself in another's situation. A person who has empathy toward another expriences the same emotions. Unlike sympathy where a person only shares the feelings of another, empathy recognizes and understands another's emotions.

Ok here it goes.....
I am in a box and another person is in thier box.
I leave my box and go into their box.
When I get their I notice the person has an issue.
I help the person with their issue by consoling them and givng them advice without letting the issue effect me.
I leave their box and go back to my box, however I make sure whatever issue the other person had I leave it their and don't take it with me to my box.
If I take it its called sympathy. If I leave it, its called EMPATHY.

Kinship in emotions - you "feel their pain (or joy, or shame or pride)" either because you are deeply sensitive and imaginative or because you have been through the same thing yourself and it is rekindling the same feelings that you had. "Sympathy" on the other hand is a kind understanding of how you think that person must be feeling because you can imagine how you would feel if you were in their place.

The ability to identify with someone else. To put yourself "in their shoes" so to speak. To understand how another person must feel even without having experienced what they have for yourself.
