I would say it would be a film that effects atleast two generations and that becomes a "houshold name" There are some movies that everyone you have ever known has seen. Example - Wizard of Oz, who has not seen it - no one. You can even go into more depth and call a movie a cult classic like - Rocky Horror, Star Wars, Star Trek, that have become infamous and has built a following. It does not matter who is in it, who directs it, or when exactly it was released. Did you know that Wizard of Oz was a huge flop at the theaters? It took years before everyone new it as the movie they know today.

I used to sell postage stamps for collectors and what was a valuable stamp depended on two things: interest and availability.
For a movie to be anything... like the sound of a tree falling in the forest and no one to hear... does it make a sound? It depends on its following. There are movies that I personally would not follow. But, in their particular cults these films are classic. I live in the back of a store that deals with just this sort of thing and happened to buy a couple of movies from them. What! Not the kind of thing that I would consider classical. But, there is a following for it. SO, unless there is that kind of interest in a movie it is just one hand clapping. a bit of zen there.
All this other stuff is techo razzledazzle that you entertain your friends with once you have agreed on your own brand of insanity.
by the by, I liked something called the history of violence, any chance for that?

A classic movie its a movie that goes beyond a regular script and causes you to discover something that was there and yet you never noticed before. An emotion that you hadn't felt in a while but is there every time you watch the movie.

When a movie, no matter when it takes place, it is relevant always. Certain themes are always in the movies that are considered classics, like adversity (specifically rags to riches or vice versa), romance, etc. It also helps if the movie is well done- i.e. looks good, written well.

I consider a classic to be a movie/story that transcends time and is appealing to mass audiences. Something that in 10-15yrs you could mention a line/scene from the movie and everyone knows what your talking about.

A combination of perfections:
-Lighting
-Script
-Acting
-Camera Work
I love great films that have no-name actors.
Also classic films have to be several years old, I think.
