If the stress and mood swings are from depression, a herb called kanna works wonders. However, do not take it if you are on any antidepressents or anything for mental problems.

Otherwise, you can make tea that will relieve stress and lower mood swings. Some of the herbs that are good for that are:
-Catnip (I know you will laugh but it really works). Catnip is a marvelous tea for all-over stress relief. Soothing and sedative for your nerves, it eases internal stress and anxiety.
-Ginseng root. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which is an herb that balences oppsites and heps the body defend itself from stress. It should not be taken if you have inflammatory conditions such as bronchitis, high blood pressure, or if you take other stimulants.
-Kava Kava. Kava Kava is a mild sedative that creates a tranquil feeling that reputedly does not lead to any loss of concentration or change in motor reflexes. It can be bad in high doses, so only have a cup or two a day.
-Peppermint. A tea made of peppermint calms you all over, and has been used for hysteria and nervous disorders.
-Yerba Mate

For mood swings these herbs are good:
-Dandelion root. In Chinese medicine, mood swings are associated with too much liver heat. Dandelion root cools the liver, and removes toxins to improve everything, including your mood.
-Lavender. Calming lavender tea is particularly attuned to the brain to relieve stress, headaches, aniety, deprssion, mood swings, and invigorates you.
-Nettle. The special feature of nettle is that it has serotonin (the chemical naturally in your body to make your mood better), so it helps regulate your mood.

I just wanted to give you a list of all the herbs listed in a book that I have for stress and mood swings.

I have been using herbs to treat a lot of things, so I will now tell you what I recomend for you.

Have a cup of nettle tea, but use peppermint to give it a nice flavor. Peppermint is used many times in teas to help enhance the flavor of a bland or just plain out nasty tea, but in your case it will do that, as well as help with stress reduction.

I will give you a website that is a good place to buy herbs from. I think you should buy peppermint (from the store or the website) and mix one part peppermint with one part nettle. The recomended dose for a cup of tea is about a heaping teaspoon, or about what you would use to make one cup of coffee. Put enough for one cup in the coffee maker and make it like you would a normal cup of coffee. I would sugguesting taking two cups a day so you get a full "dose" of each herb every day, but if you arent good with tea, one cup is good to start out with.

The best way to relieve stress and mood swings is exercise. It gives your body an actual physical release. After a brisk walk, say about 20 minutes or so, you should feel much better. Follow it up with a nice lavender scented bath and a lavender scented lotion rub down and you will feel wonderful. Also, foods help to create stress and mood swings. Stay away from too much sodium or refined sugar.

Although herbs and supplements are much better and my preferred fix over prescription meds, they aren't really meant to be used as much as we do. Americans tend to over medicate themselves with either prescription drugs, herbal supplements or both. Herbal supplements are to be used just as prescriptions are - when something is medically wrong and your body is not functioning the way it is meant to naturally. Often times, your body is functioning the way it is being treated. With a good diet, exercise and using vices not at all or only in moderation, your body will feel more like it should again.

The question is why are you getting mood swings and what kind of stress.

For women with pre-menstrual syndrome, there can be in imbalance of estrogen and progesterone. Usually there is too much estrogen. Progest, or natural progesterone cream, helps many women. It evens out the moods and makes PMS a less extreme.

5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is a naturally-occurring amino acid, a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Basically it helps to alleviate your mood by increasing the serotonin production. When you have a higher level of serotonin in the body, naturally it'll help to alleviate mood swing, reduce aggression & improve on your moods. Most important that it works but do not take it for too long period in high dosage.

Kava kava or St. John's Wort. Melatonin at bed time to calm you for sleep. I am presuming that you are not perimenopausal. That would call for other supplements.
