It's a mass of mushy, jello-like mucus that plugs the cervix when you are pregnant. Sometimes it can come out in one big lump, or sometimes it comes out a little at a time. Some women don't even know they lost it. Sometimes there will be a little blood mixed with it because it can break capillaries when it comes loose. It can happen as early as a month before you go into labor, or it may not happen until the day of. It all just depends on the woman.
I didn't even know that I had lost mine, and I knew what to look for, so even if you don't know you have lost it, don't feel bad. A lot of women don't know either.

"As your cervix starts to open, this plug comes out. It will be stringy, gooey, and clear or white with possibly a tinge of pink. This may be your first sign of labor. When it happens call your healthcare provider. Some people never notice the mucous plug. Their labor may begin with the rupture of the sack of amniotic water."
-"Your Pregnancy & Newborn Journey" by Jeanne Warren Lindsay and Jean Brunelli, PHN
It's also known as the "bloody show" and how much discharge you have varies.

You might know it and you might not. Mine started falling out about a month or so before I gave birth to my first son. When pieces of it fall out, it regenerates to keep the cervix sealed and infection out of your uterus. Mine looked like a big, snotty, off-whitish blob of phlegm. Sometimes plugs are streaked with blood, I've heard. Mine wasn't.

it looks like an opaque jelly. You don't always lose it but sometimes you can as you start dilating. It can be anywhere from whits-ish to pink stained.

It's like a ball of really thick discharge. It's creamy colored and sticky. Not all women lose them.
