I`m taking prescription drugs from a renown Psychologist for the past 8 years for panic attacks, anxiety, depression.
The dose has been tapered to a minimum, thanks to his advices, the relaxing technique he has taught me.
But his greatest advice is to continue to lead my regular life without any new breakthroughs, as it would trigger the old symptoms, and aggrevate the matter.
Suppose that happens to you, while away? The hospital there
would have to start your treatment from A, B, C. The costs
are very high. Who will look after you in that busy life? And the very purpose of going abroad will e defeated.
With foreign students comming to India, as we enjoy such a
high standard of education, why think about the absurdity, as in your case, to go abroad.
Please stay back home. Your Doctor has adviced you. And I too, as a sufferer request you to.
Take care.

I'm no Psychologist, but from what you've said, I'm pretty sure either the following applies: 1. You never saw a "Psychology Doctor" and were never told the above things, or 2. You are having difficulty explaining exactly what tests you went through and what the doctor told you.
The stress of moving to a far away place and having to meet new people/adjust to new surroundings can be tough, but the fact that you've said you "really want" to go to NYU says to me that you're prepared to endure that stress to get what you want.
Do you suffer from social phobia? Maybe this is what the doctor discovered? If you do, it's understandable that he would advise you to stay close to home for a while since those with social phobia would not do very well in a completely new environment, let alone one where meeting new people and being very social is practically a requirement.
All in all, even a Psychologist has no right to tell you what you can or can't do. If you do what you want, I firmly believe that is what is best for you. Always. You can take his professional advice, but if you find yourself wondering what would have been had you go to NYU, I would say you're worse off.
Good luck.

If we went through life avoiding all stress, we wouldn't have much of a life. Attaining a degree, abroad or otherwise, just by its nature is a stressful endeavor. Make it a goal to learn to manage stress and then live life to its fullest.Believe me, you'll regret not attempting all the things you wanted to. Your "psychology doctor" sounds unprofessional. Are you sure he was a real doctor? I, too, would be interested in seeing the "tests" he administered. If you stay out and "chill" for a year, your chances of going back to school are slim and you've wasted a year.

Psychologists are not the best choice-maker: they aren't you, they can't really say what you really wish for ,they can't really say what's in your mind, how ambitious you are to go studying abroad, how excited you are even though if you tell him unless you know exactly yourself but it's hard and almost unfeasible ^^...
The chance you have it here. If I were you, I would. Friends are one of the closer persons you have and they are still letting you go because they know that's what you want, even though you'll miss them all because they want your happiness.
In the end, nothing is wiser than your own desire and choice because if you lose this opportunity, you won't have another one. Moreover, if you'll be really stressed once there, it would be difficult to handle but not unfeasible : It will be a challenge and just have to win this challenge to get over it... I support to go there, don't miss any chances in your life that can make you the one you want to be ;)

Only you know what you can truly handle. If you are someone who complains if even slightly uncomfortable in new situations, then forget it. Your friends believe a change of pace might do you good - or are looking to get rid of you. Just kidding. Well, who knows...? If you went to a licensed therapist, then there was nothing "strange" about the tests, unless he asked you to strip or something. I would file this under: listen to your gut and follow through. It's your life and you only live it once from what I can tell.

Yes! It will be empowering to you to face the adventure and challenge of travelling. I spent a year in Israel and Europe and don't regret one single moment of it! You will have stories for a lifetime and your worldview will be expanded and deepened. I suggest that you prove the doctor's "strange" tests very wrong and have a blast travelling! Good luck to you!

By your answers, you really can get stressed over not so big issues, so I think you should try to live overseas for a short period of time first to try out instead of jumping into it so soon.

Hey, sometimes the shrink can be wrong. Oh, by shrink I don't mean any slurs on psychologists. You should try it out. You only get one chance!
