This is a difficult question. I am Greek and I can tell you what the Greek mythology is suggesting.

Prometheus was a Titan and did not have much respect for the Gods. Actually Titan and the Gods of Olympus mountain had a war at some point. Prometheus was a very good crafts-man and he was the one that created man from materials and presents from Zeus. He relay liked the man (It was his creation) and did not want to see them suffer since the other Gods did not care for that creation that did not offer them anything, so he decided to give the the fire. He went up to Olympus mountain and stole the fire from Helios' (Helios=Sun) chariot the fire and gave it to people. He was of course punished for that later. His punishment was to be tied on the mount Caucasus and two eagles would it his liver. Unfortunately for Prometheus because his was immortal his liver kept growing back and that punishment, according to the story, continued for 30,000 years when he was saved by Hercules.

See the link for the full and detail story. Is a good bedtime fairytale.
