Download this software:
http://www.textpad.com
You can view pretty much anything using that software and its free. Just click on the attachments and save them on your hard drive. Then right click on the document and do OPEN WITH and use textpad. It wont be a nice layout like Word since you dont have word, but at least you can read the stuff in them.

You could go out and purchase Word. You get a great deal of functionality out of it, and I would recommend it to any computer user. However, if that's outside your price range, microsoft offers a program called "Word Viewer". This lets you open documents and look at them and print them, but you can't edit them with it. You can download it from the link in the sources list below.

I don't know that I have any good advice for you but I suppose I'll give it a go...
I can't really help much without knowing what you're using.. though it sounds like you're probably using Outlook Express...
In which case, you might want to make sure OE (Outlook Express) doesn't block attachments... This is accomplished through Tools>Options>Security and uncheck "Block..." in the top box
if it's anything else, you'll need to consult the help/faq.

then u can read it without notpad or anything
----------
or if u can change the file extention from DOC to html and double click the file it will edit on the internet explorer
-------
if u need to know how to change file extention ......:
i'll be short..

then go to the file right click ---> rename ---> change the DOC to HTML and don't remove the .
that mean the file name should be as XXXX.HTML

but you could download the attachment ::
save it in your hard disk ( my documents )
and open it after..
the computer would prompt you to what software to open :::
it would display a list >>>>
just choose mswordpad >>> its the closest software to msword
