Sweetie don't be a follower, and don't try to fit the mold that society creates. Clothes won't make you, your talent will. Grab your board, be yourself, skate no matter what you are wearing. Anyone can stand on the sidelines looking the part, it's those who have the talent no matter what they look like that will standout.

If you like skateboarding enough you'll support the companies by purchasing their clothes. Thus, you become a sk8er.
Having ridden for DuFFs shoes, I can tell from experience...
if you can hold your own at a park you're a true skater. Just get out there and skate and don't worry about what people think about you. It's not about what you wear, its about how you skate.

you can skateboard without wearing namebrands, just make sure you wear somthing that looks the part
