No, it's owned by Viacom which owns MTV, and CMT and the owner is white. White people are always complaining about stuff being racist just because they aren't in it. BET was created because MTV and Vh1 would barely show Black musicians and Black culture. But nowadays the network has gone down the drain and it has a lot of problems with the images it presents. Did you ever notice that whenever their is a female host she is always lighter than the male host? Like on 106 and Park. They always make the girl lighter and the guy darker. i think that's internal racism. If you don't believe me you'll have to watch BET to see what I'm talking about.

If there was a network called WET (White Entertainment Tevelvision) or AET (Asian Entertainment Television) it would also be considered racist. So technically it is racist. Racist as in discriminatory to all people who are not black. Racism works both ways.

"before mtv wouldnt play and kind of music that invoded blacks soo i dont get"

Yes, but now they do play music by black people so why shouldn't BET feature shows with white people?

Personally, it doesn't bother me that BET exists but do I think it is a bit racist. I think it is ok to have the network though since there really does seem to be the need for more shows that have African-Americans in them. As far as I know only the UPN Network had shows that had African-American families. In the case of Spanish or Portugese channels.. I would not consider them racist since most of the shows are in a different language. I think there is a need for channels where shows are broadcast in different languages.

As for the person who said he didn't think people who had been oppressed or discriminated against could be racist.. I have to completely disagree with you. I am part Asian and I have cousins that are full Asians. I am sad to say that some of my cousins are the most racist people I have come in contact with. On the other hand, I used to work with an African-American woman who constantly made fun of Asians. I think it is possible for ANYONE to be racist.

Discrimination is treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit.

First of all, there is only one RACE.... the HUMAN race, so unless people start sprouting 4 arms , 4 legs and a big ole heiney, lets make sure we're using the proper terminology and grammer while were at it.

Here's the issue. You can have a spanish channel, you can have BET but god forbid there was a "White" Channel there would be heck to pay. Not saying it's right or wrong, just the truth.

huh seems I remember MTV playing Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna, and other races during the eighties. It did not matter what the color of the skin was, talent was all that mattered.

But now it seems like no music is played only stupid programming like "Real World"

People don't understand what racism really is. "Organizations and institutions that practice racism discriminate against and marginalize a class of people who share a common racial designation. The term "racism" is USUALLY (but not always) applied to the dominant group in a society, because it is that group which has the means to oppress others, but readily applies to any individual or group(s), regardless of social status or dominance.
The purposeful omission of white people from their programing denotes BET's racism.
By the way, take a grammar course or two!
