Your answer is in the final word of your question-habits. A habit is a strong force. Something stronger than the habit is needed to impose the changes necessary. A law against drugs may not stop someone from using them but being arrested and detained sure will. The threat of lung cancer may not be enough to stop someone from smoking but a positive biopsy or an uncontrollable cough may do the trick. Also a habit doesn't form over night and doesn't go away over night. I quit drugs, smoking and alcohol abuse over a period of time but still struggle with poor eating habits. I strive to teach and train my children to develop better habits and higher levels of self control so they won't have to face the same challenges. For those of you who don't have issues with bad habits and addictions you should thank your parents. Even if your memories of child hood are not pleasant you can't deny that you were trained somehow to have the self control to over come these habits or the fortitude and good judgment to not fall into them. I did not have that advantage and struggle every day as do many other people. Be compassionate and have some empathy if you wish to understand why oh why some people...

I think, to answer your question, eating habits are worse, but let me expand that a little. Firstly, let me say that I do not believe that the gov't needs to 'do anything' about either. It is not the gov't responsibility to regulate health choices for people. It IS, however the gov't responsibility to protect our liberty. So, gov't does not need to limit our choices through bans of any kind. Next, I believe that the US's probelems go deeper than simply bad eating habits. In general, our population has bad lifestyle habits. We drink too much, we are too lazy, we watch too much tv, we eat poorly, some eat too much, some don't eat enough, we do not exercise enough, etc. Speaking of Japan and France, that brings up something I have often used to defend my position that cigarettes are not as unhealthy as the 'anti-tobacco cartel' would like us to believe. For example, there is a LCDR (Lung Cancer death rate) that is tracked by nation....The LCDR show a much lower instance of lung cancer per capita in Japan vs. the US, however (as you pointed out) smoking is MUCH more prevelant in Japan than the US. Now, if smoking 'CAUSES' lung cancer as we have been told time and time again, how can this be? There MUST be other factors that play into it. I have long said that you cannot look at 'smoking related deaths' objectively. There are WAY too many other factors to consider. Especially in smokers...while Americans are bad in general, smokers are WORSE (in general) about eating habits, lack of exercise, over indulgence in alcohol, etc. I say this, only because I know it to be true as a smoker. Smokers have a more live and let live attitude that usually translates into a more laid back lifestyle on health choices. Anyway, that is my thought in this.....hope it makes sense.

They don't see it as mistreating their body. When you enjoy something, you don't see the bad in it. Hence, smoking, drugs alcohol, etc. I've had drug and alcohol problems for years, and gave it all up. The only thing I cannot give up are cigarettes. I know how damaging it can be, but can't seem to get that through my head.

Lots of reasons for different people. Some people subconsciously punish themselves. Some just don't believe any harm can come to them until they get older and it's to late or too hard to stop. Some can't live with the way they feel and don't have the skills to change it without chemically altering themselves. For some it is hereditary.

Because they lack the ability to know what is good and what is bad. They will of course regret in the end. The only thing we can do is pray for these kind of people to change into a better person.

Some people believe that nothing will hurt them, so they keep on with their behavior. Others have to follow the pack and not think for themselves. And others just aren't educated about the dangers.

Most people think the smoking, drugs, and alcohol is cool. They usually do it because their friends do it and then they want to do it. Some people do all of those things because they're depressed. Everybody can make their own decision. Here is a song that people really need to pay attention to.

" Be careful little eyes what you see,
Be careful little eyes what you see,
For the father up above is looking down in love,
Ohh be careful little eyes what you see.

Be careful little ears what you hear,
Be careful little ears what you hear,
For the father up above is looking down in love,
Ohh be careful little ears what you hear.

Be careful little hands what you do,
Be careful little hands what you do,
For the father up above is looking down in love,
Ohh be careful little hands what you do.

Be careful little mouth what you say,
Be careful little mouth what you say,
For the father up above is looking down in love,
Ohh be careful little mouth what you say.

People need to start paying attention to the little things.
My gym coach always says, " It's the little things."
