A cottage is a much more refined version of a cabin. A cottage generally is finished with fine woodwork and flooring. A cabin is usually a crude shelter for use in a rural setting.

A cabin would be more of a 'basic' structure... plain, so to speak... a cottage may or may not be the same size as a cabin, but tends to have a more 'finished' look and feel to it... plush as opposed to rustic.

A cottage would also tend to have more decorative woodwork.
