You probably won't get your first ultrasound till around 20 weeks but they do have another device to try to hear the heartbeat although sometimes it can't be heard untill around 10-12 weeks.

They will use the doppler to listen to the baby's heartbeat. If there seems to be any complications they may do an intravaginal ultrasound. It is still too early to do a actual ultrasound because you will probably not be able to really see the baby. But I have this really great link that show great pictures, real pictures, of the baby week by week. This may help you hold out until you are about 20 weeks so you can see yours. You should be able to hear the baby's heart though! I used to go into an empty exam room while I was pregnant and just put the dopler on my belly and play chace with my baby ( the sound of his heart beat on the outside seemed to scare him and he would move every time)
here is the link: I thnk it is a christian site but don't let that bother you if you aren't christian ihas some great pictures from conception on.

It depends on your doctor... and their "standard of care". I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant. I went in for my first visit at 6.5 weeks pregnant, they did an ultra sound that she called a "viability" ultra sound. I guess that was to make sure that the baby was definately in the uterus and not in the fallopian tubes... Then I was back in at 9 weeks, and they did it again, this time more to verify the age of the fetus, because my dates were not matching up with my last menstrual cycle. I had a third ultra sound done at 12 weeks for a test called the "UltraScreen" it helps measure early on downs syndrome. It's relatively new, and not necessarily avaialbe everywhere... And not always covered by insurance, but my husband and I opted to do it anyway for peace of mind. I won't have another ultrasound until 18-20 weeks, and that's when they will do a full inspection for any defects and make sure the baby is developing properly... Most people find out if it's a boy/girl at this ultrasound.
As for heart beat, they can use a doppler around 12 weeks to pick up the heartbeat, without doing an ultrasound. Your first prenatal visit will be vvery extensive and long, they do a full exam including pap smear for most people... blood work, and bring your list of questions!!!
Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck!

Depends on your doctor. I had my first ultrasound when I was about 12 weeks. If they feel the need to do an ultrsound, then they may give you one. It also depends on your method of payment for prenatal care as well. I am 30 weeks and already had 2 ultrasounds. Nothing's wrong with my son, just got lucky and had 3 done. I think if you a recieving Medicaid, they only give you one or two. If you have good insurance, they give you more than one. Be careful if you do have insurance. My doctor told me that something was wrong with my baby's spine. I transferred doctors and my new doctor performed an ultrsound and showed me my son's spine and nothing was wrong. Most doctors try to get money from you insurance company by teolling you that the baby may have a problem and they would have to perform an advanced ultrasound so be aware of this.
Congrats and Good Luck!
Let everyone know what you are having when you find out!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It depends on your Dr.'s office. I am 5 weeks, 4 days pregnant and I get my first ultrasound in 2 weeks to see the baby and to see the heartbeat. Some offices do give an u/s in the beginning. Others, you won't get an u/s until your 20 week one. So, hopefully you will, as it's amazing to see the little beat beat of the heart when the baby is still so teeny! :)

They won't yet do an ultrasound on you unless you are having problems with the pregnancy. They usually do these ultra sounds between 5- 6 months along. But you Will be able to listen to the baby's heartbeat after 9 wks. Good luck!!!

At 4 weeks, theres not really anything to see yet. They will listen to the baby's heartbeat to make sure that it is in the normal range. The first ultrasound usually doesnt come til around 18-22 weeks when theres something to see. Good luck, Congrats!!

During my pregnancy they waited till 20 weeks and then again about 2 months later. You will get to hear the heartbeat after that at ever doctors appointment. It was the greatest thing in the world.

They will do an ultrasound to check the position of the fetus and if you wish, to see if it is a boy or girl, although you may not be far enough along to see that little detail. To hear the heartbeat, my doctor simply used a stethoscope and let me listen.

you dont need an ultra sound to hear the baby's heart beat that is called a fetal monitor. They will check it at every appointment going forward. You will not get an ultra sound they wait for this type of test until you are in the area of 20 weeks. YOu usually only get one sonogram per pregnancy unless there is a cause to take another look or poor genetics in your family or the dads.
