No, I don't agree. It is what keeps us going through bad periods. It's like the metaphysical equivalent of the survival instinct. Hope, is forward not backward looking. I may have misunderstood the point of your question, because, you may be arguing that what we hope for often doesn't come to pass. If so, I don't think that matters, because we are free to go on hoping that it will.

no, i don't think hope is supposed to be like a promise of something to occur. it's never a concrete definite thing. it's just our ability to want more and to see other sides of situations. but does it lie to us? no, i think hope helps us see another point of view. we can choose to go with that point of view or not depending on the resources and information we have on hand for that particular situation. in other words....hope is an option. it's a possibility. it's the opposite side of despair.
so if hope=lie, then despair=truth? not necessarily at all right? not all despair is truth and not all hope is a lie. like i said, those are options we have in life. they are reactions to an action. we choose which one we want at the moment.

Yes, because there is no pre-ordained destiny or fate, the only meaning to life is that which you make. Hope is an illusion that you create, your only true success and happiness will come from your own efforts (or failures).

Machiavelli believed that hope and flattery were men's biggest enemies.

Hope is like oxygen. It poisons and corrodes, but there is no life without it.
