The Stanley Cup as we know it today is not the original bowl but a replica. The original is on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The Stanley Cup has several rings to it. When all of the rings have been filled with the names of the winning teams, one ring is removed from the cup and replaced with a blank ring. I'm not sure if the top ring is removed each time but it would only make sense. Additionally, only the largest rings are removed from the cup...the remaining smaller diameter rings and the replica bowl remain.

The Stanley Cup reached it's maximum size years ago. When the bottom "tier" runs out of room they remove the one at the top (oldest) and add a new one on the bottom. The old tiers go to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada.

Being a hockey fan for so long, I know that they take of the "rings" from the bottom and "retire" it. A fresh one is put on so the name engraving can continue. If this measure wasn't taken the cup would eventually become too big and heavy to carry around. It did however start off very small. It's current size is how big it will stay.

When they run out of room on the cup, they retire one of the rings/tiers and it is placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto with the original Stanley Cup.

As you can see from looking at it, the oiriginal Stanley cup is on the top and the tiers have been added below to make room for the names that have been added since they started giving this trophy out.

They will remove one of the bands from the cup to accommodate new names. I don't know how long it takes for a band to fill up but I know there are no plans to make the Cup any bigger than it is now.

Yep. When a ring is filled, they remove the oldest ring, which would be the one at the top, and put a blank one on the bottom. The last team on the filled ring, Tampa Bay Lightning. First team on the new ring will either be Edmonton or Carolina.

the cup will never again increase in size. rather, when all 4 bands become full(which i beleive has already happened) a band will be removed and put on display in the hockey hall of fame, so that a new band can take its place
