Even if your idea has already been invented, your idea may still have value if it has a unique twist to it. The whole product may not be able to be patented by you but any novel part of it may.

Do a prior art search using the on line patent search service and compare what may be already patented with what you have. Then determine if any refinement you may have is worth the effort of further patent protection.

You can't be sure it hasn't already been invented. You can check to see if it is protected by patent in the offices that issue patents in the US, Europe, Asia and elsewhere. It is probably best to have a professional check for you if the idea you have is valuable. If the patent is filed for vanity then just file the patent and any existing inventors will contact you to tell you they had it first.

patent search. in that i wish you good luck. i have to search patents and it's a pain, but you can at least start online. if you have $$ you can get a patent lawyer.
