Cheap - Do all the paperwork together. This only works if you can agree on everything. (I filed in Colorado, the paperwork was available free online and the filing fee was less than $200)
Moderately expensive - Do most of the paperwork yourself and hire a moderator to help in resolving areas of disagreement. (You can usually find a moderator for less than $100 an hour. You'll still pay the filing fee.)
Expensive - Do most of the paperwork yourself/with a moderator, and hire a lawyer to check over everything and represent you in court. (Lawyers can cost you $100+ an hour, plus your moderator's fees, and filing fees.)
"You'll need to sell your own blood for a year just to eat" expensive - Argue with your ex about everything and hire a lawyer to pick over every tiny detail. (The retainer on a good divorce lawyer can START at $6,000 - and there's no guarantee that the bill won't skyrocket past the retainer.)

Do the paperwork yourself, rather than involving lawyers. The majority of divorces these days are done this way. Sit down and work out how you want the split arranged then fill out the paperwork (which can be downloaded).
Good luck.

If there is no fighting involved, call the courthouse, and ask if you can file the divorce yourself. In some states, you can do this, and costs around $65. That's only if you both agree to it, and no children involved in a custody battle. Call them, and they could tell you if it's possible in your state. Good luck!

If you do not have any children and you own no real estate, then you can fill out divorce forms online for about $300.00. It's sad that they're that cheap and that simple to get, really. After all, you did give your word to your spouse and to God that you would stay married "until death" .
