Flies land on the ceiling by flying close to it, sticking their front pair of legs above and in front of their heads (a la Superman), and grabbing onto the ceiling as they fly under it. Their inertia causes them to do a half-backflip, pivoting around their front legs. They then grab hold with their middle and back legs.

Have you watched spiderman? You see how the spider clings to everything no matter what's the position. Sideways, headdown
side up, upsided down, any position whatsoever. The fly does not have any specific time to flip. Sometimes he flips in slow motion (to him) fast to us, long before he gets to that ceiling, other times he he gets to the ceiling only on one limb and flies away as if he didn't make it and other times he just follow up with the other legs and stays there for as long as he likes except if one of us take a swat lash as him. We live on the water so we have occassion to obseve flies and stories of them will make you
boil over with laughter! One thing that I will tell you is that they are not creatures of one set habit. They will change landings or resting places to suit themselves.

Poor little fly upon the wall
He ain't got no maw or paw
He ain't got no one to comb his hair
but he don't care, he's bald headed.
It really depends on how depressed with life he is. If He can find the energy to fly after reviewing his dismal life, he just might land by night time.
