Bad distribution of wealth from the beginning. Too much corporate, colonial, and land-baron greed.
The United States was built by pioneers who owned what they built.
Not so in South America.

It's probably due to the original intentions and the mix of people in Latin America. In the US, you had immigrents who came here determined to do better than before. Therefore, their determination built industry, commerce, and a better way of life. In Latin America, the majority of people were already there, living their own happy lives before the spanish came. Then they where inslaved and just treated badly by the Spanish. Therefore, they have little initial ambition to make the continent as a whole better. The majority of the original population of Latin America wanted to live, whereas the initial population of the US wanted to thrive.

Latin America isnt poor.
It has ircher more peacefull countries and poorer more violent countries. The problem is distribution of wealth, alot of Latin American countries have a huge disparity between the rich and the poor. Other of course are simply poor, and other do relatively well. It depends which country your looking at. Of course you cannot compare them to Canada and the US, but i think we are just spoiled.

Whether you like the answer or not, it's because of the people themselves. You can claim colonialism or some other excuse, but America suffered colonialism and poverty too. And we overcame it. Sad as it may seem, those countries are third world because of the inhabitants. That's all they'll ever amount to on their own.

Poor initial planning? Luck? Who knows? I will say though, that for believing that I've been unlucky almost all of my life, I was born lucky in that I was born in a country that is capable of taking care of their own without leaning on other countries for help or illegal activities.

I think overpopulation is one of the reasons. Also, lack of access to education and healthcare in many of the countries, and governments that don't care about their people so they misuse tax money.

To one of the people who answered the question, let me say that "America" is the whole American continent, including Latin America. United States is a better term.

No money, not much industry or tourism, high inflation, high government debt. Not much natural resources to sell. Reasons like that. Again, no money.
