We typically run on the line with and iPod or some thing and we run in companions. yet no we do not get to have water breaks each mile or mile and a 1/2 or so. We run in a immediately line with some hills and it bypass 4 miles out and four miles back witch makes it 8 mile for that day. Usually it is between 3 and 4 miles; some school courses are different. Each school has a 'home' which is generally a park where their course is laid out at, and each school has different lengths. The course length for invitationals also differ according to the school that is hosting the event, but again, it is usually a little more than 3 miles (5k).

Most high school races are 5k (3.1 miles). There are the occasional stage races that are in the beginning of the season which are 2 miles. They are used to get new runners used to being in a racing environment.
For weekly mileage it is usually from 20miles- 45miles/ week.

It somewhat depends on where you are and what age you're talking about, but 5K is the norm with a few locales / levels going to 6K.
