I think it depends on the ideals and ambitions of the individual designer. Some designers quantify their success and goals by whether or not they are published in leading design periodicals such as CA/How/Print or by awards and accolades they get or whether or not they are asked to speak at other design events.
But like any other career, a dream and a goal as an artists should ultimately come down to whether or not you get fullfillment and challenge from what you do. This, of course, is a little more difficult for artists and designers because we get bored easily and stagnation can effect our creativity.

That said, a goal of an artist should be to maintain that passion they have for what they do. Without it, they aren't much of an artist and people can pick up on hollow work.

I would love to elaborate on my dream as an artist....but I'll keep it "short and sweet". Like most artists, my goal is to make the viewer feel my emotions and understand the messages that I want to echo off the world. I want people to turn in their sleep, to be pulled out of reality into the mysterious unknown, and to feast from the buffet of philosophy! I want their minds, even for a second, to see my work and go "Wow." I want a worldwide epiphany!!!!

As a custom designer my goal was to bring to fruition the design that my customer wanted but couldn't do for his/herself....very satisfying.

As an artist my dream is to paint what I am driven to paint, to have people buy them because they HAVE to have them, because they touched something in them like nothing else ever has. I want them to recognize that my paintings are painted through me and not by me and that is why they can't resist them and want to live with them. The highest compliment paid to me is when someone buys my painting. It is like my children finding their true home. It is my dream made manifest.
