My daughter couldn't find anything good at the library. The young adult section is very small and she has probably read everything there that would interest her. Please make some suggestions and briefly explain the topic of each. Thanks.

Authors:
Meg Cabot/Jenny Caroll-there's alot of books she wrote, from the Mediator series (about a girl who can talk to ghosts, including her dad that died when she was very young), the 1-800-Where-Are-You series (about a girl who gets struck by lightning and gets the ability to see missing/kidnapped kids in her dreams), and the Princess Diaries Series (about a nerdy high-school-girl who finds out she's a princess)

Lurlene McDaniel-She has over 30 books, all about teenagers and children with illnesses, such as cancer, and trying to fit in with the 'normal' people while battling for their life.

Caroline B. Cooney-she also has a variety of books, from the 'Face on the Milk Carton' (about a girl who sees her picture on the back of a milk carton and believes her loving parents kidnapped her), to 'Twins' (about two twin girls: One is sweet, nice, and smart, while the other is rude and mean. the mean twin dies, and everybody thinks it was the OTHER one).

Books:
Wenny Has Wings-it's this really sweet/sad book about a girl named Wenny who dies, and her brother and parents have to go on living without her, while taking care of thier new child

Speak-Honestly, I don't know what it's about, three friends recommended it to me, and it got great reviews.

Takeoffs and Landings-it's about this two country kids who's mom is a public speaker, and is never home. They finally go on a tour with her,and learn that her life is harder than they thought.

Turnabout-These two old women (i think they're around 90 or 100) are given the chance to become young again through a new medical breakthrough. The medicine, though, instead of keeping them one age forever, actually makes them go backwards, so they get younger each year. They have to find a way to live as they get younger, and can no longer drive or work.

Someone Was Watching-a family goes on vacation to a river- mother, father, son, & daughter. The little girl goes missin, and police believe she drowned, while the son thinks she was kidnapped.

Anything by Tamora Pierce is wonderful for girls. She writes fantasy novels based around a female hero. The characters are solid and the stories are fast paced.

She has writen many novels most in quartets.

Personally I start with Wild Magic which is in fact the first novel in her second quartet.

To follow the correct timeline though one must read them in this order:

Alana: The First Adventure
In The Hands of the Goddess
The Woman Who Rides Like a Man
Lioness Rampant

Wild Magic
Wolf Speaker
Emperor Mage
The Realms of the Gods

The First Test
Page
Squire
Lady Knight

Trickster's Choice
Trickster's Queen

Terrier - This one will not be released until this winter.

There are many books that your daughter could not only read and enjoy but also get a heads up on the rest of her class. Maybe something like "To Kill A Mocking Bird" by Harper Lee or any of the books written by Lurlene Mcdaniels. She writes wonderful books dealing with the various struggles of teens dealing with illnesses such as cancer. Very good books. Also I loved the book "The Face On The Milk Carton" by Carolina B. Cooney. These are just a few of the books that I enjoyed. You can find more great suggestions on Amazon.com.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden-pretty well-known now, it's about a girl who struggles to become a geisha in Japanese society during the Great Depression

Anything by Lurlene McDaniel-her books are sad, but they're very good.

The Color of Water by James...sorry I dont remember the last name. A black boy has to come to terms with his mother being white, at the same time the story of his mother's life is told.

The Bean Trees-A girl kind-of adopts a baby girl and has to make a life for both of them.

Scarlet Letter-I've never read it, but I've heard it's good.

She should also try reading some of the best-seller books. They're good, and the library will most likely have them, or she can borrow them from somewhere.

Jaclyn Moriarty (the Year of Secret Assignments), Sarah Dessen (the Truth about Forever, and other books), Ann Brashares (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), Megan McCafferty (Sloppy Firsts, etc), Mary Hoffman (if she likes fantasy--the Stravaganza series), Lauren Myracle (ttyl and ttfn)... so many! Check out the reviews of these on Amazon--easier than explaining them all here!

She's probably too old for "young adult" fiction by now. Has she read To Kill a Mockingbird, or anything by Jane Austen, or Daphne DuMaurier? How about Tolkien? Does she like science fiction? Fantasy? Philip Pullman's "His Dark Mysteries" series is excellent.
I loved anything by Anya Seton or Mary Stewart at that age. They are historical or semi-historical stories, and very absorbing.

I can totally relate b/c my library isn't that good either. My favorite book is Speak (I forgot the author's name), but it's a great book. I also read the A List, a series by Zoey Dean.
