Well if its your first time usually your gyno will walk you through it. Your first exam can really effect how you view your reproductive health for the rest of your life so you should really get your exam from a gyno you feel comfortable with. You should ask as many questions as you need to. My first time was very informative, my gyno used a mirror to show me my cervix and explained how thing like HVP can affect its health.

As far as the visit it self expect some discomfort, it shouldn't hurt but it is uncomfortable and cold. They gyno inserts this device that most people know as a duck bill, it opens your vaginal walls enough so that the Doc can see in side. This doesn't hurt, its mostly cold. Then your gyno will insert something that looks like a mascara brush into the center of your cervix and take some cells from it with a little spatula looking thing, this is a bit uncomfortable and you may have some cramping after wards but that's totally normal. You'll also get a Brest exam and usually your gyno will teach you how to do them yourself. This all happens in about 10 min. and most gyno's will talk to will they are preforming the exam to distract you. All and all this is part of being a responsible sexually active woman, and year after year it gets better and better. Good Luck!!

Well, the first time I went was when I had just turned 17 (I make it seem like it was ages ago, haha). I wanted a birth control prescription. Since I am sexually active, she had to do a vaginal examination, but I've heard from a lot of people that they don't bother with the exam if you're under 18 and not sexually active.

Anyways, first she made me change into a hospital gown (open front), and examined my breasts for lumps. Then she did a PAP smear, which is where they use a speculum to open up your vagina and then scrape some cells from your cervix to test them, and then did a basic examination, and we were done. No pain or anything.

It was a little awkward, but not too bad.

I absolutely hate getting a pap, but it's neccessary. And like she said, they see women on a daily basis, it is uncomfortable, but once you get past your first time it gets easier. And if you are comfortable with your boyfriend being in the room with you i would say go for it. He doesn't have to be standing where he can see you exposed, he can be standing beside you holding your hand, or even distracting you. Good luck, and don't put it off any longer, go ahead and get it done, and if you are sexually active ask for birth control, it may be a little embarassing, but it's better than being pregnant and having to go once a month, and way better than having a kid at a young age.

I had to agree with the above post. Its kinda embarrassing for me to get examined, even though I have been going to obgyn for the past five years-since I became sexually active. My advice-choose a female doctor, you will feel a little bibs more comfortable with it. Also they will ask to examine you and do pap exam. Relax, they have seen plenty of naked women in there.
