The situation - 1 out, runner on third.
Batter hits fair ball to shortstop and runner on third leaves for home. The ball is thrown by the SS to the catcher to get the runner out. The catcher removes his mask and in an attempt to catch a poorly thrown ball, reaches out with his mask, catches the ball with it, and proceeds to tag the runner with the ball before the runner touches home plate. Is the runner out? Why? Or Why not?

He's safe. Rule 7.05(d): Each runner including the batter runner may, without liability to be put out, advance-
(d) Two bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a thrown ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play

If the ball is in the catcher's mask... and the catcher tags him with the mask, the runner is out.
How do I know this? Because I've seen a fielder catch a ball with his hat and proceed to tag a runner out with the hat (which still contained the baseball.
There are no rules stating HOW the ball has to be caught, so long as it's caught and the runner is tagged with the ball (or something containing the ball, whether a glove, a hat, heck, you could still the ball in your shoe... so long as your hand is in the shoe too, the runner's out.

I have played baseball all my life and this actually happened in a game I played in high school. The catcher has to touch him with the ball or with his glove if the ball is in his glove. He cant touch the runner with his mask that is holding the ball and the runner be out. Our catcher tried to touch the runner with his mask since the ball was already there and he didn't have enough time to switch it to his mitt, so the runner was called safe and the run scored. That's what happened in my only experience with this situation. The umpire may have been wrong but it makes sense to me.

The runner is out as long as the runner advancing to home gets tagged by either the ball itself or the ball in the catchers mitt.

The runner is safe. A player cannot intentionally use a piece of equipment other than the glove to catch a ball and tag a runner out.

He is safe. You cannot throw your glove to catch a ball, and you cannot use your mask to catch a throw and place a tag with it.
You either tag with a hand (ball in it) or you tag with the glove (ball in it).
What he did was actually obstructing the runner by using his mask.

why do so many people keep saying "it doesn't matter what you catch the ball with as long as you catch it"... TheOnlyBeldin CLEARLY showed that a player can't remove a part of his uniform to catch the ball... he can only use his glove, or his bare hand.
Those of you who say "I saw this or that happen in a game", are confused. I don't know what level of baseball you're talking about, but you didn't see this happen in a major league game! Not only do the umpires know that you can't do that, the players know it as well.
