so i've always felt out of place in school but i joined choir this past year and i finally found a place where i fit in... acting is my first love and i LOVE musical theater. i hope to move to nyc when i graduate and i want to perofrm no matter what. i currently go to a very large high school [2600+] and earlier this summer i thought i would enjoy it. but a lot of my friends go to a charter school in the larger city next to ours called the public academy for the performing arts. its a really good school but i'm afraid if i go there i will end up doing something i regret. or worse, i'm afraid i wont measure up to the talent. what should i do?

Your fears are normal. But you have to push them aside and follow your heart. You will always have those fears. They have done interviews of famous people who still get butterflies and stage fright and are not confident in themselves. That is very normal. You just have to learn to control it. And if it is something you really want to do you will learn how to control it.
You should at least give it a try if that is something you really want to do. How will you know unless you attempt?
Just do not lose yourself in the process!!!

If you feel as though you have found a place in your school and do not want to switch or for whatever reasons choose not to, then why not look for classes outside of school to boost your skills. Check in with your local theatre companies and see what classes they offer. If you think you will be happier in a school with an additional focus on the performing arts, then go ahead and switch. Either way, you risk regretting something - that's a side effect of making a choice.

You shouldn't worry about measuring up to the talent level as that is why you are in school - to learn, improve and grow, right? And is it better to challenge yourself by working with people who will challenge you, or to be comfortable in a place where you might not be as challenged?

But the bottom line is that only you can decide what is right for you. People can list their experiences, both good and bad, at Performing Arts High Schools for you, but your experience can be whatever you make of it - no matter where you are.

Break a leg!

Hi,

Years ago I was in the same boat you were in. Let me tell you, I changed over from regular school to a performing arts school to be a voice major- it was a WASTE of time. You will do much better for yourself just taking acting lessons from a private teacher, singing lessons, etc. Many of these teachers will provide performance classes/workshops where you can showcase your skills. Those PA schools are full of weirdo's who will never EVER amount to anything other than a waiter or gas station attendant.

Also, be forewarned that the workload at these schools is really high in terms of academics. I remember how bad it was so I actually switched back to just getting by in school and REALLY focusing on my voice lessons. Two years later, not one of those kids could even touch me vocally and I was much happier. Remember- ANY artistic craft quality comes from a student teacher relationship- never an organization! Focus on finding an outstanding drama teacher- someone with a proven track record - not just a great brochure or web site!!! Always focus on the success and quality of the students, this is the tell all!

Hope this helps!

If you really like the arts then do it. Don't compare yourself with others be yourself the the best you can be and be honest. In this world there is so little honesty and I believe it will be appreciated by your teachers and peers. Work hard try your best it doesn't me you'll be successful but how would you know if you never try.
No matter how successful you become in life you must stay true to yourself. Hey if your try 20 things and you don't like them at least you narrowing down the list. Chin up! go for it!

stop worrying about what other people think. Stop trying to fit in. That is normal. Normality is best defined as the giving up of ones individuality in order to fit in with a world that won't care about you either way. If that don't work, try prozak, then you won't know the difference.

i WENT to Creative and performing arts in Philly. it was the best experience in my life. Go, or you will regret it. You will get better and better at what you do. By the time you get out, you will be amazing at your field with skills you never dreamed of. If they take you you will definitley measure up!

I think you should follow your dream and go to the performing arts school. Plus if you aren't as good as the other kids you could learn from them.
