there are numerous assistive technology devices out there for people with disabilities. in my field, i work specifically with severely handicapped children and outfitting them with communication devices. Assistive technology can be as basic as a PECS communication system-- which is using pictures of objects and actions and exchanging them with the person to get the end result. More technological advances are communication boards that have touch screens and speak the word/phrase/sentence or even sing a song! some of those devices can be found here: http://www.amdi.net/
every school district has a AAC coordinator, i would suggest contacting your local school district to find out more to suit your particular needs.

Switches are another form of assistive technology where children can turn on toys and use a computer even when they have limited movement.

Starting at low tech---you have pencil grips and slant boards available....from there the sky is the limit...communication devices, software that reads text to students, switches for various activities....it just depends on what the person needs to be successful
