It will be similar to the post WWII cold war. Troops will always be in harms way with the hate for Americans. We will have to continue to babysit Iraq until they can become a strong democratic union, which will be never. What is disturbing is that now Iraq will be a target because it smells like America and the government will never be able to act independently without the US. So we can leave and let all of the efforts go to waste or we can stay forever and babysit a country of primitive thinking so that another mad man doesn't take over. Its a lose lose situation. Don't get me wrong, I have 15 family members who are veterans and active and I love this country, but we started something we cant finish. I hope I'm wrong on this

Not until the fall of American conservatism. This war is based on greed and corporate profits as much as anything, and the Republican party is corrupted with big oil and Halliburton, among others. As long as Halliburton keeps winning no-bid contracts for rebuilding Iraq, and keeps turning record profits while building the American war machine, the Republicans will keep the war (which cannot be won) going.
I fear too many liberal politicians (who are clearly in the center and not far enough to the left) intend to stay the course in fear of political fallout if they buck the system.
Americans need to support a true leftist like Russ Feingold or maybe a third political party if they want this war to end.

The War in Iraq is over. We destroyed the last remnants of Iraq's military 3 years ago. Iraq has no more soldiers that are fighting against us. Iraq is the battlefield for The War on Terror. The War on Terror will be over when the terrorists stop raping and torturing women and children, quit terrorizing the iraqi people, and stop kidnapping our soldiers and torturing and diseboweling them. When all that stops, when the terrorists decide to surrender and retreat, then the War on Terror will be over. Until such a time comes, we shouldn't retreat and surrender.

The war in Iraq will end just like the war in Viet Nam ended... when the Amerikan people get sick and tired of it and put real pressure on the politicians to end it.

It will end like Viet Nam... AmeriKa will declare that it won and then all the military and their families and the civilians and the people who supported them in Iraq will board the helicopters and escape from the country while the Iraqi's are storming the gates of the Embassy.

AND THEN... hollywood will come out with a whole bunch of Rambo movies, portraying AmeriKans as be-all, do-all superfighters so that the next generation of young AmeriKans will grow up playing video games in which AmeriKans wipe up the ground with Muslims.

Bush said after 9/11 that it would be a long and difficult war but Americans seem to think that this war is a television show that has a definite time frame. Just to remind some-we still have troops in South Korea, Japan, and Germany. Without America the world would destroy itself. WAKE UP!!

There is only one way to end the Iraq war, so far I have yet to hear anyone speak of it. To Speak of it strikes their hearts and their brainwashed minds to face up to the truth. America got us into this war and it will take America in her darkest hour to rise up and say enough. The truth of the matter is 911 was an inside job, the truth of the matter is we have not had an elected offical to represent us since 2000. We have persons in office from representatives, senators, governors, vice president's and president's whom the American people did not vote for but whom obtain those offices by acts of fraud. It is intresting to note that there are no limitations on acts of fraud. America is at a crossroad today in history. The choice we make about this truth and this truth alone will determine what type of country our grandchildren and children live in. It is hard to make choices when our newspapers, radio stations, local news, refuse to give us the cold hard facts of what is happening in our world today. Had they not been consolidated to aide in this upsurping of our legal government, Iraq and Afganistan may have never happen, and lots of people would still be alive today.
We maybe cannot go back in time and correct all the things that have gone wrong but we can start with the latest crime of our government and bring into the halls of justice the real purpertators. Hopefully it would be a real start on the cleansing and healing of this nation to investigate all the crimes we know have occurred in the last 50 years. Maybe there can be real justice for the people of this nation and the people Iraq. But we have to begin where we know for a fact things went terribley wrong. That begining was 911. 911 must have a criminal investigation, the government can not be allowed to hide behind national security again, maybe in that one small measure we can give a little justice to the Kennedy family, and maybe once we get thru this investigation we can go after the people who murdered our president in broad day light on national t.v. But I digress, let us first investigate 911, indict and arrest those whom the investigation finds the evidence to indict. Lets take back our free press, and demand that the press always be protected under freedom of speech even when it means telling the truth about any administration. If we do this then the people of the world will believe that America is a real place, and not a evil place. There is enough evidence right now to warrent an investigation into this adminstration, not only for war crimes but acts of treason against the citizens of this country. But first American's must Admit to theirselves and others that 911 was not properly investigated, the members of the 911 commission were compromised by conflicts of intrest, and that the President nor the Vice President had the right not to be under oath. The citizens have every right to demand they be under oath, the choice is not their's to make. It is my believe that treason was committed. It is my belief that we can bring our soliders home safely when we as a public admit to that simple fact, treason did occur. When we the people demand that the persons responsible be indicted, charged, and tried for their crimes, I do believe we can come to a peaceful negoation with Iraq and Afganistan. It is the only way I see for us to have out of this mess., is to hold the parties responsible for getting us there accountable.

The United States, unlike its progenitor the British Empire, has no stomach for long term conquest. Americans are uncomfortable, mostly, with the very label of Empire, let alone its ramifications. Like vietnam, most folks expected it to be a quick affair. However, the U.S. will never have the endurance to stay amidst all the chaos, much longer than a few more years, unless they pacify a large segment of home dissidents (myself among them) with an influx of oil to lower those suddenly outrageous pump prices. Then, that might buy them more time. Otherwise, within election of 2008 or shortly thereafter, we will have withdrawn from a quagmire that should have never been, lest for jingoism and greed.

Bush invaded Iraq for only two reasons: 1) to 'get even' with Hussein for humiliating his daddy during Desert Storm; and 2) because Big Dick Cheney want all the oil swimming underneath Iraq's sand. THERE WILL BE NO TROOP WITHDRAWALS until Chneney has a rock-solid, iron-clad arrangment in place to steal all that oil so the he and his Halliburton friends can get richer and richer and richer.

Bush, in collusion with Cheney, Rumsfeld and the U.S. Congress, has:

1. Illegally and unconstitutionally invaded a sovereign nation that did not provoke, threaten, or attack us;
2. Massacred tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens;
3. Killed more than 2,500 U.S. soldiers;
4. Turned America into a police state where citizens are presumed guilty until proven innocent;
5. Initiated failed economic policies that will bring on a recession (or terrible depression), not to mention it's already put the U.S.A. trillions of dollars in debt;
6. Tortured irresponsibly-incarcerated prisoners without regard to the Geneva Convention;
7. Dismantled environmental laws designed to protect the world's fragile ecology from devastation;
8. Run ripshod over the U.S. Constitution, and becoming a law to themselves;
9. Posed a threat to every other nation on Earth, encouraging them to build nucelar weapons to defend themselves against the new "evil empire" - the United States of America;
10. Neglected America's poor, sick, aged, homeless, hungry, disadvantaged, underprivileged, and disabled while playing 'Robin Hood in Reverse' and stealing from the poor while giving it all away to the rich so the rich canmake generous (if not illegal) campaign contributions and keep the GOP in power.

These people all deserve to be impeached, or tried for high treason. If convicted, they should face a firing squad.

We're gonna be in Iraq for a long time, until every drop of oil gets sucked out of its sand.

The war will never truly end, at least not in the next ten years. But the more pressure the public puts on government to bring our troops home the sooner it will happen. This can be seen now with the president addressing the issue to try and save his ***.
