Actually the first "component" is the name of the server, not the protocol. The remainder is the domain in which the server resides. So, for the address www.yahoo.com, www is the server name and yahoo.com is the domain that houses the server. Anything after that is the path on the server to the data you are asking for.

When you make the request, your browser asks the DNS for that domain what the address is for that server and returns it to your computer which then makes the connection.

The protocol is determined by the http:// or the ftp:// at the begining of the URL. Each protocol has it's own ports. 80 for http (web) and 21 for ftp.

www.yahoo.com

www = the type of protocol being used, ie www, ftp, (this also specifies the default port to be used www = port 80)
yahoo = 2nd level domain name
.com = top level domain name
