I agree with some of the other answers-you shouldn't split the bill if one of you eats something more expensive. Why you just look at the tab and pay for what you eat, spilt the tip and be done with it?

it depends on why you need to split the meals. I mean, if it's just you and a close friend, then it's not so bad. Even if there are going to be times when one orders more than the other. I think it usually balances out at the end. But splitting the bill doesn't necessarily mean evenly. I think most times each person is pretty honest and will pitch in their fair share.

But if you doing some sort of group vacation package like trekamerica where you are forced to put into a group kitty, then there is not much you can do.

Unless both meals are of equal cost, I think it would be unfair to split the bill. If I want a steak, and you want a burger, why should you have to pay for my steak?

Well, if you are going with your girlfriend, please just pay for the bill. But, if your freinds, then I don't think it's fair to split the bill unless you all order the equal value of food.
